This year, the cheapest 5G smartphone available from any manufacturer has developed into a strange competitive category unto itself. For Samsung, it used to be the Galaxy A32 5G, which launched alongside the A52 5G and A72 5G in January.

That title has now been officially moved to the Galaxy A22 5G. As with its higher-tier sister, the A22 is available in both 5G and standard 4G configurations. And, once again, squeezing 5G inside the LTE variant without deviating too far from the initial price point forced some significant downgrades.

When it comes to the Galaxy A22 duo, some of the primary advantages the LTE model has over its sister include its Super AMOLED display, which has a little lesser resolution but is otherwise superior. Additionally, the cameras are marginally improved, with an 8MP ultrawide, a 2MP dedicated macro, and a 13MP selfie cam. As of the time of writing this article, the base 64GB/4GB model costs €209.

On the other hand, the Galaxy A22 5G has a starting price of €230, which means you’ll have to make do with a 90Hz LCD display, a 5MP ultrawide camera with no depth sensor, and an 8MP selfie camera. The Galaxy A22 5G also has a slew of redeeming attributes. One feature that strikes out is its FHD+, 90Hz LCD display, which is far better than the Galaxy A32 5G’s basic 60Hz, 720p+ LCD – a device that technically ranks higher in the range but is still somewhat more expensive than the A22 5G. That is the outcome of a half-worth years of developments in the cheap mobile sector. Quite impressive.

Samsung Galaxy A22 5G specifications in a nutshell:

Beyond that, there are a number of other intriguing aspects of the A22 5G to consider, such as its Dimensity 700 chipset, which appears to be a slight downgrade from the Dimensity 720 found in the Galaxy A32 5G, but has some unique limitations of its own, such as a maximum video capture resolution of 2K.

To recap, the Galaxy A22 5G, like its brothers, is part of Samsung’s new and ambitious plan for the best-selling Galaxy A family. The new phrase “Awesome is for everyone” suits perfectly. All of these devices place a premium on the value offer.

Offering both 4G and 5G variants of all devices is another method to maximize the appeal of the assortment. Speaking of which, affordable or not, the Galaxy A22 5G retains all of the benefits and delights associated with One UI 3.1 on top of Android 11, as well as Samsung’s recent promise to improved and longer-term software maintenance.

Inside The Box

As a budget product, the Galaxy A22 5G comes in unassuming packaging. Perhaps Samsung can do a little bit better in terms of transit protection. On a more positive side, the A32 5G is well-wrapped in plastic all around, including thin strips adhered to the plastic frame for added protection.
